What to Expect
(as a Vegan in Rhodes)
As Greece’s largest Dodecanese island, Rhodes is not only known for beautiful beaches or captivating medieval sites but also for great Mediterranean food and a wide selection of hotels and luxury resorts lining the shores. It’s the perfect destination for a European holiday in the warm country of Greece.
But what about vegan travelers? Is Rhodes/Greece vegan-friendly, and where can you find the best vegan food?
Overall, the relatively small island of Rhodes isn’t necessarily notorious for an established vegan food scene just yet. BUT, there still are several restaurants with mouth-watering vegan options thanks to the growing trend. If you know where to look, you can also find a handful of fully vegan/vegetarian food spots in Rhodes. Besides, Greek cuisine is usually fresh with lots of dishes being accidentally vegan, especially Antipasti – i.e. Dolmadakia (rice-stuffed vine leaves), Gemista (rice-stuffed tomatoes & peppers), Gigantes (butter beans in tomato dill sauce), olives, aubergine salad (dip), fava (split pea dip), and hummus.
However, a real highlight is that Rhodes now has a fully vegan hotel, but more on that later.
Good to know: Since most Greeks are Orthodox, you may encounter the word “nistisimo” while traveling and looking for food. It stands for fasting food, which is mostly without meat or dairy. Dishes labeled this way often happen to be vegan, so keep an eye out for that!
In short, being vegan in Rhodes is very manageable with delicious food to try.

If you haven’t found the right place to stay in Rhodes yet, don’t worry! One of the best things you can do on a lazy holiday in Greece is to book a hotel with breakfast & dinner included. This way, you don’t have to worry about leaving the resort to go on a food hunt. And as a vegan, finding the right place to stay is crucial. Luckily, Rhodes has several trendy hotels with an adapted vegan-friendly kitchen and labeled options on their buffets.
Down below you’ll find two recommendations of places to stay to make your vacation in Rhodes easier and a culinary delight!
GOJI Vegan Hotel
As the name of this hotel already suggests, this is an exclusively vegan hotel located in Ialysos near Rhodes Old Town. It’s Rhodes’ very first vegan hotel and offers a plant-based restaurant & snack bar with traditional Greek dishes turned vegan. This sustainable hotel is perfect for all the vegans out there who want to have everything in one place without having to worry about where to eat. Ultimately, the question of where to eat vegan in Rhodes can be answered with this one location. I highly recommend checking it out!
Elissa Lifestyle Resort
When we were in Greece, we stayed at Elissa Lifestyle Resort – a super trendy and newly renovated adults-only resort in Kallithea. The breakfast and dinner buffet always had a decent selection of vegan items such as cereals, potatoes, vegan dips & cheese, wraps, pasta dishes, and so on. Additionally, Elissa shares a pool bar called Street Food Hub with Helea (the family-friendly counterpart of Elissa). This Street Food Hub offers labeled vegan food like chimichangas or burgers – a definite must-go! Besides, the resort has a few other restaurants that usually have at least one vegan dish on the menu.
